Portrait studies

October 24, 2020 by riasharon

How loose do I want to do portraits? I did a series of “sketches” yesterday to play around with that but also decided to explore several color palettes and mediums (oil pastels versus pen versus straight up gouache).

greta gerwig sketch

I really like this palette but not sure I liked the oil pastel lines. I like the color. Maybe if my sheet is bigger so the lines are not so big relative to the composition.

semi geesture portrait

I love the colors (the balance of yellows and blues) but the linework feels contrived.

leni robredo sketch

I didn’t like my color selection — it’s too real, too hot… but I really like the structure of the face.

I liked the drawing when I did it and i LOVE this palette but I don’t like the inked lines.

ria sketch

I liked the size of this one — I feel like I had enough room to be more relaxed about the strokes. And the color palette is great too. I took what I learned from the previous ones and applied it to this one.

New stuff

June 23, 2017 by riasharon

I’m a horrible blogger! I must admit my neglect of this space but in my defense, I’ve been making stuff… which was the original intent of the blog… to keep me accountable in some way to making art every day.

Right now, I’m laser focused on The Animal Guidance Project. It’s been steady progress… making the animals, reaching out to retail partners, dreaming of new products, lining up shows as the collection gets ever closer to completion, and probably most significantly, getting real clarity on the personal significance of this project.

So expect that my presence here will continue to be slim… but I’m a pretty good Instagrammer. 🙂 Please, please do connect with me there. Because, you know, filters! ;P

Got new minicards!!! ??? Aren't they cute? ???? . . #riasharonart #stlouisartist #stlouisart

Perspective

May 23, 2017 by riasharon

"Sometimes I think it's possible to misread your whole life and virtually everything that transpires in it. To choose one lens and see everything according to its particular distortions. Then one day, if you're lucky, the lens falls off even for just an instant and you realize there are other lenses out there, different shades, opposing visions, even, and the tale you've been imagining as the story of your life is just that: an imagining, a construction. Beware of the single rendition." – RIP Alex Tizon . . This is why I love animalguidance.org Switch things up, try on a new lens. We are voyagers!!!

May 22, 2017 by riasharon

Day 14. Happy Monday! Pondering where we come from AND where we are going, which made me think of #moana "We are voyagers!!!!" — we really are, aren't we? ? I suppose a question to ask is what guides us in that metaphorical open sea. #100DaysofUnfinishedStories #the100dayproject #watercolorportrait #riasharonart #stlouisartist #storytelling #makearteveryday #artistsway #inthestudio #artistslife #artprocess

Sisterhood of Motherhood

May 14, 2017 by riasharon

I heard somewhere that the egg you came from is already in your mother's womb when she is a baby in her mother's womb — that's how actual cells and embodied knowledge is shared directly between generations!!! ✨In this picture, my mom (far right), my grandmother (standing left), my great grandmother (seated) and me (girl in front) — four continuous generations of women! These days, I'm feeling deeply grateful for my lineage of strong, brave, loving, intuitive, wise women. And honored to be part of the sisterhood of motherhood. To my mothers and sisters @yesyesreyesv @deonnasan @carmenareyes @assshtag @lynnmhess @cakinjane @jrbruin93 Happy Mother's Day! ? . . #motherday2017 #thegoddessproject #lineage #family #amotherslove

3rd time’s a charm

May 4, 2017 by riasharon

This is my 3rd time doing #the100dayproject and it's a totally different experience. In years past, it's been about checking a box more than anything. Commitment, follow through, stamina… those are important and something happens when you do something 100 times. But this year is deeper, it's not just about me controlling the process but leaving room for what comes. Of course, it's driving the "checking the box" part of me crazy. But been there, done that. And I have a feeling these stories are part of something that even I am yet unaware. #100DaysofUnfinishedStories . #makearteveryday #artistsway #artistslife #inthestudio #riasharonart #watercolorportrait #portraitsofcolor

Eagle Sketch

May 3, 2017 by riasharon

Eagle sketch for the #animalguidanceproject inspired by the Philippine Eagle, rarest and most powerful in the world. It is the dominant hunter of the islands, king of the skies. Eagle was a prominent character in the myths and stories of my childhood. It's gift is perspective, seeing (and hunting) from vantage points high above in the forest canopy. Igpawan! There is a path for each of us

Artist at Work

April 30, 2017 by riasharon

Day 12 Artist at work. As I struggle through this project, I am reminded by @alicia_lachance_ and @oncefilms that making art isn't always easy or fun. Not only is there the required hours and hours that one must devote to the craft, but there's also wrestling with the work that's in the process of becoming. Delight and joy are often reserved for after, or for the audience. But they can't be my barometers for whether to keep going with something. So, onward…. . #100DaysofUnfinishedStories #the100dayproject #makearteveryday #artistatwork #artistslife #artistsway #riasharonart #inthestudio #stlouisartist
